COACHING

Coaching is an appropriate alternative to therapy for adolescents who are functioning well overall, but have problems in one area (e.g., poor academic progress, test anxiety, ADHD, low self-esteem). Coaching targets are usually smaller and step-oriented than in therapy. There is a narrower scope in dialogue and topics, reserved for hings directly related to goal-completion. Solution-focused conversations and activities are common. While therapy has some homework, coaching has lots of homework. Coaching is usually not indicated for children under 12. Plum Tree offers two kinds of coaching: ADHD Coaching and Individual Coaching.

ADHD Coaching

Older youngsters (pre-teens to college-age) meet individually with Dr. Weller. Parent check-ins may be included. ADHD coaching can be far more effective than individual therapy. ADHD coaching is action-oriented, solution-driven, and is the venue in which plans are developed and executed. ADHD coaching typically includes:

  • Getting and staying organized
  • Managing homework
  • Beating procrastination
  • Handling time effectively
  • Developing sensory awareness (restlessness, hyperactivity) and mastery
  • Improving focus and concentration
  • Enhancing the benefits of ADHD
  • Access to and contact from Dr. Weller (via phone or email) when needed to stay motivated on on-track

Individual Coaching

High school and college-aged youngsters meet individually with Dr. Weller. Parent check-ins may be included.  Individual coaching goals may include:

  • Improving academic performance (e.g., homework, college applications, test-taking)
  • Improving social skills
  • Enhancing self-esteem
  • Prioritizing and managing a busy schedule
  • Increasing mindfulness
  • Clarifying goals
  • Access to and contact from Dr. Weller (via phone or email) outside of sessions, when needed, to stay motivated and on-track
